And work\u2014obsessive, all-encompassing, identity-determining\u2014was also how they related to the world. They didn't have much else to do on Saturday nights: why not work?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The point is, these people are now multi-billionaires, and the nerdy loser they once were remains intact beneath the billions. Only now they have the power to tell you how you should live. And they're telling you: work seventy-two hours a week, like I did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    But there is one variable they fail to consider, every time: they also had the right idea, at the right time, with the right resources<\/strong>. The hours were the side dish. Important, of course. But just the side dish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Taking the hours away from their success story and leaving everything else behind would probably make little difference. Taking away the right idea and leaving only the hours? You'd end up with millions of exhausted people waiting for an enlightenment that never comes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Having said all this\u2014and said with the respect due to anyone who has built something real from nothing\u2014one fundamental thing remains: values are personal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
