Saturday afternoon. A conversation overheard.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don't celebrate April 25th. It's not my holiday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Said with the calm, almost proud, confidence of someone who believes they're saying something courageous. Instead of saying it under their breath, as one does when they suspect they're saying something stupid, they said it out loud. With their posture. With their tone. With that specific air of someone who's read half a sentence on Facebook and decided they've understood everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If there's one thing that gets on my nerves, it's ignorant arrogance, no matter where it comes from. But I resisted. I didn't intervene. But I've been thinking a lot these days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now I'll write what I thought!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What exactly did we get rid of?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On April 25, 1945, the Northern Italy National Liberation Committee ordered a general uprising against the Nazis and the forces of the Italian Social Republic\u2014Mussolini's puppet supported by the German occupation after September 8, 1943. Cities like Milan and Turin were liberated by the partisans even before the Allies arrived. The formal surrender would come on April 29, effective May 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But let's stop for a second on one word: liberation<\/strong>. Liberation from what<\/em>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From a regime that had abolished fundamental freedoms in 1925. From a foreign military occupation. From deportations. From racial laws. From a system in which dissidents, Jews, homosexuals, communists, and anti-fascist Catholics disappeared into prison or worse. From the war\u2014a badly lost war, started by those who believed Italy's future lay in walking at the Roman pace alongside Hitler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So when someone says \u201cit's not my party,\u201d you might ask them: What exactly is the part that you don't like?<\/em> Freedom of speech? The Constitution? Not living in a totalitarian state? I'm curious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Festival of Ignorance with Arrogant Guests<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The problem isn't not knowing. The problem is not knowing. e<\/em> to be convinced that you know everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There's an Ipsos survey commissioned by ANEI\u2014the National Association of Former Deportees\u2014that reveals something interesting: 131% of young Italians between the ages of 16 and 25 say they know nothing about the fascist regime. 211% say they know very little. But the majority define themselves as "fairly well-informed." This is the most classic and devastating combination: little knowledge + a lot of self-confidence.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there's this: only 55% of young Italians call themselves anti-fascist. 22% say no, 23% don't know. In Italy, in 2026, almost one in four does not know whether to be against the fascism<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let this sentence really sink in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politics that fans the flames (with institutional elegance)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It doesn't help that, for years, sections of the Italian political class have turned April 25th into a symbolic battlefield instead of reclaiming it as a common heritage.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senate President Ignazio La Russa also paid private tribute to the fallen of the Italian Social Republic\u2014the same state that collaborated with the Nazis in the deportation of Italian Jews. La Russa himself declared that the Constitution "\u201cthere is no reference to anti-fascism<\/strong>\u201c. Technically true in the most literal and useless sense possible \u2014 It's a bit like saying that the owner's manual for your car doesn't say not to put gasoline in the coolant tank.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

General Vannacci, a member of the European Parliament, is not alone in his rejection or lukewarm attitude toward the anniversary. And in Maclodio, in the province of Brescia, the mayor of the Brothers of Italy party has banned the ANPI from participating in the official ceremony on April 25, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ANPI. The National Association of Italian Partisans. Banned from Liberation Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I'll stop here because I don't have enough irony to contain this in a sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut it was a civil war\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the favorite refrains of those who want to put things into perspective is this: April 25th celebrates a civil war, therefore it is divisive by nature, and therefore cannot be a holiday for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It's true that the Resistance also had the characteristics of a civil war: Italians against Italians, fascists of the RSI against partisans. But this interpretation, taken to its extreme, amounts to saying that liberation from slavery cannot be celebrated because the slave owners were also Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The civil war wasn't between two equally legitimate political positions. It was between those who wanted to continue to be the armed guard of an occupying Nazi-Fascist regime and those who wanted to free themselves from that regime. "Both sides" applied to Nazi-Fascism isn't balanced: it's simply a logical fallacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ignorance as a stylistic choice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Let's go back to that conversation on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That phrase\u2014"it's not my party"\u2014isn't born from studying and concluding something different from the mainstream version. It's born from an aesthetic. From a positioning. From wanting to appear to go against the grain without making the effort to understand what the current is and why it flows that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It's ignorance dressed up as rebellion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It's the historical-political version of the guy who says "today's music sucks" just because he only listens to what's played on the radio and from only one station \u2014 convinced that disgust is already a critical opinion in itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the beauty\u2014the truly tragic beauty\u2014is that historical fascism fed on exactly this: self-confident people who didn't ask questions, who let others think, who trusted their boss because it was tiring to think alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arrogant ignorance isn't an opinion on April 25th. It is, unwittingly, its most glaring confirmation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why celebrate it, then?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not because someone forces you to. Not out of abstract civic duty. Not because otherwise you're a "fascist.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But why does the freedom with which you say \u201cit's not my party\u201d exist? Thank you<\/em> at that party. The right to say stupid things in public without ending up in prison is a direct product of the Resistance and the Constitution that followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

April 25th is not the left's holiday. It's the holiday of those who prefer living in a democracy<\/a>. If you don't recognize yourself in this, the problem isn't the date: it's democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that, with all due respect, is your problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
