For me, April 10th has become one of those dates. <br>A year ago it came out <strong>26 Rails<\/strong>, my instrumental double album. Twenty-six tracks, two sides of thirteen each, no vocals. And probably the most authentically mine I&#039;ve ever released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How a work is born from &quot;junk&quot;\u201c<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I have to be honest: it wasn&#039;t born from a sudden inspiration. There wasn&#039;t a night I woke up with a clear idea in my head, the perfect plan, the vision. No. It was born on one of those afternoons when you look at your hard drive and feel a bit like someone with a garage full of boxes they&#039;ve never opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It had everything in it. Rough riffs, half-finished ideas, almost-finished songs, tracks I didn&#039;t even know where they came from anymore. The classic junk of someone who&#039;s been playing for years and never throws anything away because &quot;maybe I&#039;ll use it someday.&quot;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That day has come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I began to dig, to listen again, to cut and sew, to add layers and then remove them, to blend different eras of my musical life. It was a long process, at times frustrating, at times exciting like I hadn&#039;t experienced in a long time. And when I finished, I realized I had in my hands something I could never have written in one go: a work that spans years, moods, influences, and obsessions. A musical portrait, without me even realizing it while I was making it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">That phrase that always pissed me off<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ilrickyverso.it\/en\/ricky-guariento-intervista-metal-fm-symphonic-reverie\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"218\">It&#039;s not clear what kind of music you&#039;re making. You have to find a direction.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How many times have I heard it. And each time, with the patience of someone trying not to respond rudely, I nodded. But inside I thought exactly the opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why should I choose just one direction? Must metal exclude blues? Why can&#039;t prog sit alongside psychedelia? And why can&#039;t electronica embrace classical music?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The title was suggested to me, unknowingly, by a friend of mine. One day she told me how she imagined her thoughts: like 21 train tracks, one for each letter of the Italian alphabet. Each one a possible direction, a thought that starts and no one knows where it will end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That metaphor struck me right away. I immediately thought of those who asked me to choose a lane and stay there. So I took the English alphabet\u201426 letters, 26 tracks\u2014and decided that each song was one of those trains. Rock, Metal, Prog, Pop, Electronic, Blues, Funk, Classical, Art Rock, Psychedelia. And also <strong>Mongolian ambient! <\/strong>Everyone starts from a different station, everyone arrives where they want. And that&#039;s how the name of this instrumental album was born, <strong>26 Rails.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And perhaps, still, they weren&#039;t enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Those who taught me that the silence of words can scream<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>26 Binaries is also a tribute\u2014unstated, undidactic, but deeply felt\u2014to those instrumental albums that convinced me, once and for all, that the human voice isn&#039;t necessary to tell a story. Indeed, sometimes removing it is the bravest thing you can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I thought about <strong>Joe Satriani<\/strong> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/intl-it\/album\/4SFG7APMZeeM97ixKPoQuk?si=0096744afa1a4135\">Surfing with the Alien<\/a> <\/em>(1987): melodies that enter your head without asking permission, a guitar technique that never shows itself off for the sake of it, but always at the service of emotion. I thought of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/intl-it\/artist\/0r1s1XoxdoXECGfyChzb2v?si=u7As4db2RMaq80qhW9TW0g\">Liquid Tension Experiment<\/a><\/strong> (1998 and 1999), that prog-metal madness born from Dream Theater that still sounds like a spaceship taking off. <strong>Steve Vai<\/strong> e <em><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/intl-it\/album\/1fyrOcra2DI3quvnzAEQ45?si=KsIxES43TAOVER8o6TI5mw\">Passion and Warfare<\/a><\/em> (1990), which for me is still one of the absolute points of reference for anyone who wants to understand what rock guitar is. But I also thought about less obvious albums. Ai <strong>Mogwai<\/strong> Of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/intl-it\/album\/6XfWE0VdiRbH9QWfyLibxW?si=e61f728a144e4f3f\">The Hawk Is Howling<\/a><\/em> (2008), with that post-rock that slowly enters you and then crushes you. <strong>Explosions In The Sky<\/strong> Of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/intl-it\/album\/0eufTqrmqa0x0A5MnzkEvT?si=25bfd314b91b41e8\">All Of A Sudden, I Miss Everyone<\/a><\/em> (2007), which are soundscapes before being music: you listen to them and you see things. Ai <strong>65 days of static<\/strong> Of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/intl-it\/album\/39TrTBzr6CRFRnh8AqxSub?si=d9e22e0cdbd340a4\">The Fall of Math<\/a><\/em> (2004), where electronics and guitars collide like two trains on the same track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then the giants: <strong>Mike Oldfield<\/strong> with <em><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/intl-it\/album\/0a3YQpBnRzJzNktOjb6Dum?si=a0c9457bf26b4913\">Tubular Bells<\/a><\/em> (1973), a work that redefined the boundaries of what was possible in progressive rock. <strong>Dick Dale<\/strong> with <em><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/intl-it\/album\/0FqJbgxMRSq608r4M04jG3?si=bc7a71bfff71462a\">Surfers&#039; Choice<\/a> <\/em>(1962), that at the origins of everything there was him with his upside down Stratocaster and that primordial energy. And <strong>Jeff Beck<\/strong>, with <em><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/intl-it\/album\/6fhTDVBs7qeoP3254hMu6u?si=zTlcr-f8TPaZYQCUew7QPQ\">Blow by Blow<\/a><\/em> (1975), jazz-rock-fusion at its best, proof that the guitar can be anything you want it to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These albums demonstrate how the absence of a voice can amplify emotion rather than diminish it. I, in my own small way, have tried to demonstrate the same thing. With my hard drive, my junk, and my 26 tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe data-testid=\"embed-iframe\" style=\"border-radius:12px\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/album\/5EE1EMzfBr0eAsz2v8C19J?utm_source=generator&#038;theme=0\" width=\"100%\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One year later<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#039;t know how many people have listened to 26 Rails across various platforms. It&#039;s not the kind of project that climbs the charts, nor the kind that brings you massive followers. But that was never the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The point was to put things in order. To make peace with years of accumulated ideas. To prove, at least to myself, that this music deserved to exist and not rot in a forgotten folder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A year later, I listen to certain songs again and I&#039;m still amazed. I say to myself: Yeah, this isn&#039;t bad. For a musician, that&#039;s already a victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Happy birthday, 26 Rails: my instrumental album of absolute freedom.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some dates come back, silent and full of meaning.
