Scrolling: a word with a powerful story!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For centuries, in Italian, "scrollare" had a very specific and almost exclusively masculine meaning. It was done in the bathroom, standing in front of the toilet, as a final gesture. A mechanical, automatic movement, devoid of any philosophical implication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then came the smartphone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word has changed body without changing soul. The automatism remains. The mechanicalness remains. Even the location, at times, remains. But the discharge is no longer water: it is attention. It is time. It is that vague thing we call "mental presence" and which we surrender without realizing it, one finger at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Squeezing became the vice that cigarettes were for the hardened smokers of the 1970s: those who lit up one after another without even remembering having lit one. That addiction had a name\u2014nicotine\u2014and secret ingredients that tobacco companies purposely added to make it more effective and harder to kick. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today those secret ingredients are called algorithms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0infinite scroll<\/strong>, that feature where the feed never ends, wasn't created by chance. It was invented by a programmer named\u00a0Aza Raskin<\/strong>, who later publicly stated he regretted it. No end of the line. No moment where the screen tells you, "OK, that's enough for today." Just the void that continues downward, waiting for you to fall into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The confessor that no one listened to<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There's a specific moment when someone on the inside spoke the truth out loud. It was 2017. His name was Sean Parker, the first president of Facebook\u2014the one played by Justin Timberlake in the movie, to be clear.<\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview he chose to be uncomfortable: the creative process behind these apps was, from the beginning, \u201cHow can I consume as much of your time and conscious attention as possible?\u201d<\/em>. The answer they came up with was simple: give you a little dopamine hit every now and then. A like. A comment. A notification. Enough to make you stick around, too little to make you feel satisfied. A social validation loop calibrated to the vulnerabilities of human psychology.<\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he added, half seriously and half jokingly: \u201cI think Zuckerberg is going to block my account now.\u201d<\/em><\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They laughed about it. It was 2017. The world had essentially done nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Trial. The Sentence. The Story.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

March 25, 2026, is a date that could become a before and after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A jury of the Los Angeles Supreme Court<\/strong>, after nine days of deliberations and a trial that lasted a full month, has issued its verdict: Meta Platforms and Alphabet<\/strong> (YouTube's parent company) were deemed responsible for deliberately designing addictive platforms<\/strong>, And negligent<\/strong> on safety measures for minors.<\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lawsuit was filed by a 20-year-old woman, identified as Kaley GM, who described how her childhood use of Instagram and YouTube led to her developing depression and suicidal thoughts. The jury awarded the following damages: 3 million dollars<\/strong>, of which Meta's 70% and YouTube's 30%. It's not a huge sum for companies with revenues in the hundreds of billions. But that's beside the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The point is the principle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the first time in history, a jury has determined that features such as\u00a0infinite scrolling<\/strong>\u00a0he\u00a0algorithmic recommendations<\/strong>\u00a0that are addictive are not simply design choices: they are\u00a0conscious and harmful choices<\/a><\/strong>, especially for teenagers and children. And companies knew it.<\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark Zuckerberg testified in court. TikTok and Snap, who were co-defendants, chose to settle before the trial began.<\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few hours after the Californian ruling, a court of Santa Fe, New Mexico<\/strong>, issued a separate ruling against Meta, finding that the company violated the state's unfair practices law, put profit ahead of child safety, and concealed potential impacts on children's mental health.<\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two verdicts. Same defendant. Same script: profit first and foremost<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cBig Tobacco\u201d moment\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Citizen.org has called these verdicts \u201csocial media's Big Tobacco moment\u201d<\/em>. It's an accurate metaphor\u2014it's worth developing.<\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For decades, big tobacco companies sold cigarettes knowing they were harmful, downplaying the evidence, and funding counter-research. The turning point came when courts began to rule that the product was designed to cause harm\u2014and that those who manufactured it knew it perfectly well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meta knew. Facebook's internal research\u2014which emerged with the Frances Haugen crisis in 2021\u2014showed that the company was aware of Instagram's harmful effects on teenage girls, particularly on body image, and had deliberately chosen not to act. Parker had said as much in 2017: it wasn't a side effect. It was the business model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference with Big Tobacco? At least the cigarettes came in packs. The feed is infinite, never ending, and\u2014crucially\u2014it costs nothing. Addiction is the price that doesn't appear on the receipt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Data That No One Likes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Meta and Google's defense was based on a classic argument: \u201cThe problem isn't our platforms, but family problems, real bullying, and the pre-existing fragility of individuals.\u201d<\/em> It's the tech version of \u201cThe gun doesn't kill, it kills the person who uses it\u201d<\/em>.<\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It's a shame that the data says otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A study conducted by the UCSF<\/strong> (University of California, San Francisco) followed approximately 12,000 children between the ages of 9 and 13<\/strong> for three years. Result: the average daily time on social media went from 7 to 73 minutes, and in the same period the depressive symptoms increased by 35%<\/strong>. The data didn't show the opposite\u2014that pre-existing depression pushed teens to use social media more. Social media came first, depression later.<\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Italy, visits to the emergency room for Suicidal ideation among adolescents increased by 147%<\/strong>, followed by depression (+115%) and eating disorders (+78.4%). These are numbers that are painful just to read.<\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A study published in Scientific Reports<\/strong> and conducted by the Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez University in Spain has clarified the mechanism: the risk does not simply depend on the How much<\/em> social media are used, but from as<\/em>. The critical factor is the\u2019problematic use<\/strong>, or when a child loses control of their online behavior and feels a compulsive need to stay connected. And those who are already emotionally fragile are exponentially more exposed.<\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In short: algorithms don't affect everyone equally. They find flaws. They get inside them. And they apply pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Implications: An Avalanche Effect<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This trial wasn't just Kaley's story. It was a bellwether case<\/strong>, a pilot trial intended to set the tone for a spate of similar lawsuits across America.<\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Social Media Victims Law Center<\/strong> he already has more than in his hand 1,000 similar cases<\/strong>. Attorneys general from 40 US states have filed lawsuits against Meta and other platforms. The California verdict is, in effect, the starting gun that kicks off a race that could completely redraw the rules of the game.<\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The companies, of course, will appeal. \u201cWe respectfully contest this ruling\u201d<\/em>, a Meta spokesperson said. Google added that YouTube \u201cit is not a social media but a responsibly built streaming platform\u201d<\/em>. Interesting refinement of the product, considering the presence of the algorithmic recommendation feed and comments.<\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But something broke. Or rather: it finally showed itself for what it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what about us, "aware" adults?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It's easy to put Meta on trial when talking about six-year-old children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It's less easy to answer this question honestly: How many times today have you opened a social media site because you didn't want to hear something?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scrolling as an anti-meditation. It empties your head\u2014technically. It fills it with background noise. With fragments. With outrages that have a fixed time limit. With sketches you won't remember the next day. With other people's lives that smile because they were selected to smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There's a convenient narrative we tell ourselves: "I use social media consciously." "I know when to stop." Parker, who helped build the system, would say that's exactly what the system wants you to think. The most effective addiction is the one that doesn't recognize itself as an addiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tap Tap World<\/em> he says it in the bridge with an unanswered question: \u201cWill we ever meet in true light \/ or stay hidden in this app's night?\u201d<\/em> Will we ever really meet someone beyond the screen, or will we all remain hidden in the darkness of this app? It's a rhetorical question. But it has the annoying habit of coming back to mind when you're there, scrolling through faces and profiles at 11 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The good news\u2014and yes, there is one\u2014is that when the trick is mentioned out loud, it stops working as well. A court just did just that, loud enough to reach this point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What's changing now<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What changes after these rulings is more subtle than the price Meta will have to pay. It's the idea that an app's design can be treated as a product defect<\/em>. Like the lack of a warning on a drug. Like a car sold without seat belts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If this principle holds up in subsequent court proceedings\u2014and it will take time, there will be appeals, and there will be costly and lengthy battles\u2014the way these platforms are designed will have to change. By law, even before ethics. And when laws change products, products change habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That's how it went with cigarettes. Slowly, awkwardly, against a thousand resistances. But it happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the meantime, there's a question worth bearing in mind. It comes from a refrain written before this story ended up in court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh it's a tap tap world we live in.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
