Before that date, the entire planet's inhabitants were dark-skinned. Everyone, without exception, including the earliest European ancestors. The proud hunters who roamed our continent were migrants with ebony-dark skin and, a fascinating peculiarity confirmed by the study of fossil DNA, often boasted very blue eyes.

Imagine the shock of those who have based their identity on the idea of the diaphanous platinum blonde of their origins when they discover that their family tree, once its surface has been peeled away, smells of Africa and Mediterranean skies..

At this point, the question arises spontaneously: why did we fade at a certain point? Was it due to some aristocratic design of providence? Was it due to a quantum leap toward a supposed anatomical perfection?

The answer is disarming in its banality: so that we don't get rickets.

Moving to more northern latitudes, towards the cold and fogs of Eurasia and the Arctic, the sun's rays became weak and rare.. The sun, as anyone who doesn't live in a digital cave knows, is the key catalyst for activating vitamin D, which governs the calcification of our bones.. The dark skin, beautifully designed to act as a heat shield and protect against tumors in equatorial areas, filtered too much light in the north.. The skeleton was in danger of collapsing, the legs were bowing, the survival of the species was in jeopardy..

Evolution did what it does best: a mechanical compromise.. He combined about twenty genetic mutations to remove melanin and allow what little sunlight is available to penetrate the tissues..

Pale skin is a biochemical patch, a simple adaptation to compensate for the lack of sun..

And if anyone still thinks that latitude determines an immutable genetic hierarchy, just take a look at the Inuit. They live close to the North Pole, yet they retain a magnificent dark olive hue.. The secret? They've been eating raw fish for millennia, which is packed with natural vitamin D.. Mother Nature had no need to bleach them..

The true masterpiece of genetics, however, comes when we look at the deep structure of our DNA.

If we analyze human biological diversity, we find that the’85% of genetic variability is purely individual. It belongs to you, to your unique combination, to your singular way of inhabiting the world.. Only a miserable 15% It is broadly related to the geographic area in which you were born or raised.

This means that between two neighbors born in the same apartment building in Bergamo, there can be a genetic distance far greater than that separating one of them from a Mongolian steppe shepherd or a Senegalese musician. The supposed blood barriers are labels invented by lazy minds who need to simplify reality so as not to be terrified by it..

Contemporary genetics doesn't just disprove racism: it makes it scientifically ridiculous.. Shows how the concept of biological race is an optical hallucination with no basis in laboratories..

The facts remain, clear and documented. And so does the sublime irony of those who persist in flaunting the purity of the Aryan lineage, ignoring that the pallor they are so proud of is nothing more than a reminder of a distant vitamin deficiency inherited from their ancestors..

I seek beauty everywhere. And if I don't find it, I smile at the irony of evolution.

Ten thousand years ago, Europeans had dark skin and blue eyes.
