It's the favorite refrain of keyboard motivational saints. Those who pontificate on LinkedIn explaining that if you keep a parachute in your backpack, you're actually just planning your own failure. The rhetoric of all or nothing<\/em>You have to be hungry, you have to be forbidden from having a plan B, you have to risk your neck at every turn, you have to refuse any alternative to prove your true worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adrenaline has an undeniable logic. Finding yourself with your back against the wall forces you to draw on resources you thought were buried, eliminates hesitation, and requires total concentration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, however, comes everyday reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ordinary deadlines arrive, bills to pay, rent or mortgage payments that knock punctually at the end of the month. And it's here that the fairy tale of the pure artist who feeds only on dreams begins to show its cracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The risk of a downward compromise<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the world of creativity and music I often see a silent drama unfolding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you turn your deepest passion into your only source of income without having a broad base, the risk of seeing it empty is very high. If every single note has to serve to make ends meet, it becomes very difficult to say no to demeaning compromises. You end up bending your taste to the whims of others. algorithms<\/a>, to shorten the songs for fear of the skip<\/a> in the first five seconds, to accept depressing contexts just to take home the reward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Economic desperation risks being a severe obstacle to artistic research. The urgency of survival forces you to pursue what works immediately, leaving aside experimentation, risk, and complexity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The triumphant narrative of the lone hero who makes it big while sleeping in a van celebrates the only one who made it, leaving in the shadows the thousands of people who along that road lost both their economic independence and their original love for what they did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Plan B opens up unexpected avenues<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

History shows that having a solid professional background or changing course mid-course doesn't automatically equate to surrender. Indeed, sometimes it's the fertile ground where something unique grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let's take Charles Ives<\/strong>, one of the most radical and innovative figures in twentieth-century music. He introduced polyrhythms and dissonance decades before they became standard practice in the avant-garde. Yet Ives ran a major insurance agency in New York his entire life. A respected professional, immersed in numbers. When asked why he didn't live solely on his scores, his answer was disarmingly honest: he explained that trying to support one's family solely through composition would ultimately ruin music itself, forcing it to become a commodity for immediate consumption. His corporate career protected his scores from any calculations of expediency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or let's think about TS Eliot<\/strong>, who wrote some of the most dizzying pages of modern poetry while working as a clerk at Lloyds Bank in London. Even when some friends offered him a bribe to allow him to dedicate himself entirely to writing full-time, he preferred to decline: this ordinary occupation gave him a center of gravity, freeing him from the anxiety of having to produce commissioned texts to make ends meet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the same thing happens in innovation: in 2009 a team of programmers invested years of effort into an online video game called Glitch<\/em>. The project was a complete failure. To coordinate remotely, however, those same developers had created a small internal messaging platform to exchange files and notes without frills. That simple support tool, born as an operational stopgap, was called Slack<\/strong>. The original plan failed, the backup infrastructure changed the way millions of people around the world work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My choice (and the price I'm happy to pay)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I'm not Charles Ives, and I didn't create Slack. I work in the steel and industrial distribution industry. A pragmatic world, made up of numbers, clients, concrete responsibilities, and a tight schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don't pretend that my approach is a magic formula for everyone, nor that it's a medal to pin on my chest. It's simply the pact I've made with myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choosing to keep a side career isn't easy: it comes at a clear cost. The real struggle isn't in coming up with melodies, but in finding the energy left after a busy day. It means sitting in front of the screen and picking up the guitar when your body simply craves rest, shielding your creative hours from fatigue and the unexpected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In exchange for this effort, I get something priceless: I don't have to answer to anyone for anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I decide to work for weeks on a challenging progressive passage, a dilated suite, or a sonic texture far removed from any commercial logic, I can do so. I don't have to check Spotify trends, I don't have to worry about the piece's marketability, I don't have to ask permission from any publisher. I finance my own tools, manage my own time, and keep the music in its purest space: that of pure passion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thermometer for understanding whether a track is working becomes an intimate matter. I seek that subtle, almost selfish pleasure of listening to a sequence on headphones and feeling it vibrate to the core. Knowing that it belongs to me, down to the last detail. If it stirs something in me after hours spent polishing frequencies and chiseling dynamics, it has already achieved its purpose. Everything else\u2014the distracted listening of passersby or the indifference of the outside world\u2014comes later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A compass, not a dogma<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Everyone must find their own balance. There are those who have the passion, the talent, or the right circumstances to throw themselves headlong in a single direction, accepting any risk, and they deserve the utmost respect for that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As far as I'm concerned, viewing Plan B as a fallback for the faint-hearted is a simplification that doesn't capture reality. A solid alternative becomes a barrier only if you turn it into an excuse to stop creating; used conscientiously, it is instead a defense of one's authenticity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It's not a question of heroism or fear. It's simply understanding what we're willing to trade along the way, keeping in mind that beauty, to stay alive, needs to be protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
