There is a specific moment when civilization stops functioning.

It comes at the moment when you realize that the dialogue is a performance, the words bouncing off a rubber wall, and on the other end there is someone smiling because they know perfectly well that you can't do anything to them.

In that moment, anywhere in the world and at any age, something ancestral and pure is triggered in the human being: the desire to punch him in the face.<\/em>

I don't say this lightly. I say it as a diagnosis. That impulse is rational, cathartic, and in some ways even morally honest. The problem\u2014as always\u2014is that it's not enough, it doesn't work, and it often makes things spectacularly worse.

But let's proceed in order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bully and his Court of Miracles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The lone bully is a romantic lie we tell ourselves to simplify the problem.

The true bully\u2014the one who resists everything, who grows stronger with every confrontation, who seems impervious to any attempt to stop him\u2014never operates in a vacuum. There's always a structure around him: the active accomplices, those who laugh and huddle together. The passive cowards, those who see, say nothing, and go home with a clear conscience because they didn't do anything wrong<\/em>. And then there's the most interesting category: the opportunists, those who don't agree with anything the bully does, but protect him out of convenience, because breaking up with him would be too costly.

That structure is the true source of his power. The bully's power is delegated, and understanding this is enough to dismantle the entire legend. Muscles, a loud voice, and a cheeky face: props. The substance lies elsewhere.

It is a collective license, renewed every day in silence by those who could revoke it but choose not to.

And here comes the first uncomfortable truth: if you want to understand a bully, look at those around him and turn the other way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From School to Parliament: Same Mechanism, Different Scale<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now zoom out.

Take this pattern\u2014the aggressive man, the silent court, the expediency-based protection system\u2014and apply it to any geopolitical scenario of the last twenty years. The result is embarrassingly consistent.

Trump<\/a> who systematically violates every rule of democratic etiquette and is re-elected by tens of millions of people who see precisely those violations as a sign of authenticity. Putin <\/a>which constructs an entire narrative of \u201cus against the corrupt West\u201d and keeps a country under control with the rhetoric of existential threat. Netanyahu<\/a> who survives every internal political crisis by using external conflict as a permanent shield. Vannacci turns every attack he receives into fuel for his own rise.

Same mechanism. Different actors, bigger stage.

"Strongman Politics" is simply a market response. Brutal, effective, repeatable. When the world becomes too complex, too fast-paced, too full of scary nuances, people stop looking for complex answers and start looking for a figure who simplifies everything. Who points to a clear enemy. Who says: I protect you <\/em>as naturally as a twelve-year-old child says Nobody touches you if you're my friend.<\/em>

Extreme polarization\u2014"Us vs. Them" taken to its ultimate conclusion\u2014is the end product, deliberately sought. In a binary world, there are no nuances to weaken you, no half-measures to betray you. There's you and there's the enemy. And those who are afraid always know which side they're on.

It works. It's horrible, but it works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Broken Megaphone: How the Media Feeds the Monster<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

And here comes the most beautiful paradox, the one that makes me laugh bitterly every time I think about it.

The logically most effective strategy to reduce these characters would be silence. damnatio memoriae <\/em>Modern: stop mentioning them, stop sharing them, stop getting publicly outraged. Cut off their oxygen.

But the contemporary information system is structurally incapable of doing so\u2014partly due to bad faith, partly due to architecture. The attention economy fuels strong emotions. And indignation is the most profitable currency. A headline that screams \u201cDanger to democracy!\u201d<\/em> It generates clicks, shares, comments, and advertising. It generates revenue.

Result: every newspaper that attacks him, every talk show that invites him to demolish him, every commentator who gravely explains how dangerous he is, is actually doing exactly what the character wants. They're building the stage for him. They're tailoring him to be an anti-establishment martyr. They're giving him\u2014free, every day\u2014proof that the system is afraid of him.

And his supporters see all this as confirmation. If they attack him like this, it means he's annoying the powerful. It means he's telling the truth.<\/em>

It's a perfect toxic symbiosis: the character needs his media nemesis as much as the media nemesis needs him. They feed off each other. They protect each other. And in the meantime, democracy suffers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dilemma: a punch now to avoid war later?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Let's go back to the initial impulse. Let's go back to the fist.

There's a utilitarian argument that sounds damn convincing at times: If history shows that these systems, left unchecked, always lead to devastation\u2014and it's the weakest who pay the price\u2014then isn't a brutal and targeted intervention a lesser evil? A form of legitimate collective defense?<\/em>

<\/em>This is the position of those who have read enough history to know how certain films end: Weimar<\/a> teaches. Silence and prudence and the "\u201cwe'll see how it evolves"\u201d<\/em> of the German ruling class of the 1930s have a price written in numbers that we still cannot fully face.

So yes, I understand those who think that. I understand the logic. I even understand the temptation.

The problem is that history, as always, has already tested this solution. And the verdict is not encouraging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brutus was right. And he still lost.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The March 15, 44 BC<\/a>, a group of Roman senators convinced they were saving the Republic killed Julius Caesar with twenty-three stab wounds.

They were right about their diagnosis: Caesar was demolishing the republican institutions brick by brick, with the enthusiastic consent of half of Rome and the silent complicity of the other half.

They were right about the gravity of the problem: without intervention, the Republic was doomed.

They also had a plan: eliminate the man, restore order.

What they didn't understand was that Caesar was the symptom, and they were treating the fever while ignoring the infection.

The problem was that the Roman Republic was already rotten from within\u2014inequality, corruption, meaningless institutions, a plebs who preferred bread and games to civic participation. Caesar had simply found a way to exploit that decay better than anyone else.

With him gone, everything else remained. The power vacuum sparked twenty years of civil wars between Octavian, Mark Antony, Brutus himself, and anyone with enough of an army to claim something. Eventually, the Empire arrived. What the conspirators wanted to avoid at all costs.

The moral is more subtle and more cruel: The aggressive leader is only the visible face of an infection that has much deeper roots.<\/strong> Striking the face doesn't cure the infection. It often accelerates it, turning the symptom into a martyr and giving the disease a new excuse to spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what do we do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Good question. Answer: Nothing convenient.

The real challenge is dismantling the infrastructure. Not the boss, but the web of silence, convenience, fear, and cynicism that puts him on the stage and keeps him there. It means working on culture, education, the quality of information, and civic participation. It means building antibodies in a society that tends to look for shortcuts.

It's slow, it's boring, it doesn't make news, and it doesn't generate clicks. No thrill, no catharsis.

And that's exactly why it's so hard to do and so easy to give up.

The bully in the school hallway still has his circle of silent accomplices. The strongman on the global stage still has his ecosystem of fears and conveniences.

The fist remains a beautiful fantasy.

Reality, unfortunately, requires something far less cinematic: the long and annoying patience of those who build instead of demolish.
